In addition to being a great road ride destination from Asheville along Riverside Drive, Marshall is the gateway to the outdoor activities of Madison County. Hiking in Max Patch or along the Appalachian Trail near Hot Springs, and rafting or paddling the French Broad are all accessed north of Asheville, but there's not much in the way of dining and drinking on the way up or back. Zuma Coffee is an exception: a vibrant little gathering place on Marshall's Main Street. Fair trade coffee, baked goods and live bluegrass on Thursday nights make this a great find close to the most things you could want to do outdoors. The friendly staff knows the area well and they might have some good tips for you on trails and other unique Madison county places to check out.
