The Blowing Rock, a rock feature located near the extremely homely and cozy mountain town of the same name, is a nice family destination with stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you're looking for a moderate or strenuous hike, this is not the destination for you. But if you're looking for a quick, easy jaunt with tons of great photo opportunities, then the Blowing Rock will certainly fulfill that criteria.
What Makes It Great
One of the most celebrated aspects of the Blowing Rock is its rather interesting folklore. The legend is that a Cherokee brave leapt from the rock after being separated from his lover from a different tribe. Grief-stricken, she prayed that he be brought back to her, and he eventually was, after being 'blown' up from the winds circulating beneath the rock.
Who is Going to Love It
Easy might be an understatement. From the parking lot to the rock itself is only a few hundred feet in distance, and the entire trail with the observation tower and gardens included is only about 1,200-feet. So, when we say family-friendly, we mean everyone from the youngest toddlers to the eldest seniors.
Directions, Parking, & Regulations
Park in the lot and pay your fee; pretty straightforward! After taking in the views and learning the cultural history of the rock, head back into the nearby town to enjoy all sorts of mountain goodness. There are world-class restaurants, cozy coffee houses, fudge stores, outdoor retailers, and plenty of intimate shops.
