Intro

Offering great views of downtown Aspen and a lovely jaunt through a pine forest and wildflower fields, the Little Cloud Trail is among Aspen's most accessible and shortest hikes. Little Cloud begins from Midland Trail, a former railroad track that is now used for commuter bikers and walkers. Little Cloud is situated at the base of Shadow Mountain, the rocky, sharp ridgeline that juts out from Aspen Mountain on the western side of town.

What Makes It Great

Not only does the hike offer great views and gorgeous scenery, but it's also possible to modify the hike and make it longer. Little Cloud intersects with lower Ajax Trail, so it's possible to do a loop. Many hikers will ascend on Little Cloud until the trail intersects with the Aspen Mountain resort and then turn around and descend down lower Ajax Trail to Koch Park and then retrace their steps back on Midland Avenue. It's also possible to continue hiking across Little Cloud on Aspen Mountain until the trail intersects again with Ajax and continue on as far as Ute Trail, if desired. If hiked together, Little Cloud to Ajax encompasses a little over two miles, but separately, the entirety of Little Cloud offers hikers 0.6 miles and the entirety of Ajax Trail offers hikers about 1.5 miles. It's important to note that the lower portion of Little Cloud features several challenging switchbacks, which is why many hikers choose to descend down lower Ajax Trail. If hiking in the winter, ice trekkers are recommended.

Who is Going to Love It

Hikers on a time crunch will appreciate Little Cloud immensely, as it only takes about 30 minutes to an hour.

Directions, Parking, & Regulations

It's easy to park at the Koch Park lot and walk a two to three minutes west on Midland Avenue until you reach Little Cloud. There's also plenty of two-hour parking on Hopkins Avenue near the Little Cloud trailhead.
