Intro

Packed with undulations and switchbacks, Leita Thompson’s well-maintained, spacious track pads your pounding feet with a dirt floor, scattered occasionally with fallen leaves and pine needles. Claiming few roots and rock monsters, the uncluttered trail allows you to fly down one hill and soar up the next. Just watch out for quick turns as you sail down and around those switchbacks.

What Makes It Great

Leita Thompson Park continues to honor the intended nurturing space of the historic homestead with a graceful trail that weaves its way up and down among wooded acreage. For pre-run stretching take to the benches near the fountain just off the main parking lot where you can peacefully prepare to kick up your heart rate. After your moment of Zen, head into the cool shelter of the pines and hardwoods.

You can decide later whether to stick with the longer red path or shorten your run slightly by taking the blue. While cruising counter-clockwise, you will cross a brief paved section of trail where you can opt to take a ¼ mile jog around the small lake. It’s no walk in the park, though, as the trail does not hold back on the hilly terrain here. Quickly catch your breath while heading down to cross the creek. Don’t fret. A couple of wooden bridges kindly carry you over.

During your run, be sure to pay attention to bits of the trail that branch off. They are marked for authorized use only. Don’t ask me how I know, but these will lead you to outbuildings that are off-limits to visitors.

Who is Going to Love It

Trail runners who need a mild hill workout and who would not mind getting in a workout for Fido as well. Since the trail is relatively wide, it is perfect for kicking up your heels with the pooch in tow. Given the number of hills though, you may be the one in tow after a couple of loops. Need a quick bout? Keep it short with the mile-long yellow trail, which begins at the opposite end near the dog park.

Directions, Parking, & Regulations

Leita Thompson Park is located on Highway 92 between Roswell and Woodstock. The parking lot is set back from the road so keep your eyes open for the pavilion and garden. If traveling south, you will need to turn around at the next traffic light as there is a median. If the main lot is full, overflow parking is available by traveling along a short drive between the main lot and the arts building. There is also a large dog park if you continue past the arts center along the drive. There are no parking fees.
