Rock climbing and bouldering in Austin may not involve cloud-piercing mountains, but there are plenty of boulders, cliff faces, and crags to be had. One of the top climbing destinations is right in the heart of central Austin at the Barton Creek Greenbelt. It has more than 200 routes, ranging from 5.8 to 5.12+. For more bouldering in town, in the southeast corner of the city near the airport is McKinney Falls, with several great routes.
Just outside Austin proper is the popular Reimer’s Ranch, with some of the best vertical climbs and overhangs in Central Texas. Still a little farther out in the Texas Hill Country, less than two hours from downtown, is Enchanted Rock. This park has lots of quality, high climbs including top-rope, trad and bouldering. Climbs range from Cave Crack, a 5.7, 100-foot trad, to the V1 Pool with No Bodies.
There are many other climbing destinations in and around Austin, so chances are that you’ll find plenty to your liking.
