The 19 acres of urban greenery at Railroad Park will beckon to folks that want a breath of fresh air. Right in the city’s center is a hidden jewel that used to be an industrial wasteland, and is now a park that celebrates families and all the flavors of Birmingham’s history. Although it is mostly open grass fields with ponds and a stream, Railroad Park welcomes kids with several play areas for kids. It has been dubbed as “Birmingham’s Living Room”, and provides the perfect two-wheeled outing for families. Grab the bikes, gather the gear, pack a picnic and head over to Birmingham’s Railroad Park to enjoy outdoor recreation at its best.
What Makes It Great
Heralded as a shining example of what’s possible when private industry and government collaborate, this park turned a former industrial eyesore into a beautiful natural retreat right in the center of downtown. Masterfully designed, a third of the park is filled with lakes and streams that are interconnected by meandering trails and pathways. The rest? Well let’s just say we think it’s just about the most ideal place to lay out a blanket and soak up the afternoon sun.
Sitting on what was once the hub of an interstate rail system, the park has large grassy fields, cool playgrounds, exercise equipment and great views of passing trains and the downtown skyline from atop the elevated trail on the northern edge of the park. There are soothing water fountains, bathrooms and a small concession stand that all make this one of the most popular family destinations in town.
Head down to Railroad Park for a casual ride and spend some quality time with the family. While the kids can romp at the playgrounds, shred the skate park, or throw a ball in the field, you can relax and take in the scenic views of the Birmingham cityscape. Top it all off with the fact that across the street is the brand-new Regions Field, home of the Birmingham Barons baseball team. Plan your trip while the team’s at home and you won’t find a better way to bond with the family than a bike ride at the park and an evening spectating America's greatest pastime.
Who is Going to Love It
Children will love the play areas and plenty of room to run once they’ve explored the pathways on bike. Kids of all ages will be filled with excitement at a passing train or the brightly colored fish in the ponds. Parents will enjoy allowing their kids to pedal and run off some energy and soak up warm Vitamin D. Seniors will appreciate the ease of access and well-maintained grounds as well as the smooth, easily-navigated bike routes. There is no shortage of things to enjoy at Birmingham’s Railroad Park, and will make a great, leisurely whether early in the morning, over lunch time, or just before sunset.
