This family-owned and operated café has 5 locations around town and brews locally roasted coffee that they proudly declare is sourced from the top 1% of beans in the world. The first O’Henry’s was opened in 1993 by a retired orthodontist named Dr. Henry Bright. His reason for opening was, “I couldn’t find a truly great cup of coffee in Birmingham”. A glance at their bean bins looks like a "Who’s, Who" of the global coffee powerhouse nations. There are more than 25 varieties to choose from, but we recommend taking their highlighted coffee of the month. You’ll get a great blend as well as a description of the flavors, acidity and source of the beans. Enough information to impress any coffee connoisseur. What Makes it Great The owners host a Sunday morning run with 3- or 5-mile options that leave from their Highland Avenue location at 6 a.m. It’s a great social run and you may even rub elbows with one of the owners. The bonus is a free cup of Joe upon your return. Most locations serve tasty pastries and lighter snacks, but the Brookwood and downtown locations have a full menu with healthy breakfast and lunch options. Try an Egg N’ Cheese Bagel, Southwest Breakfast Wrap or Power 9 Grain, a ham, turkey, bacon, Havarti cheese and egg sandwich served on their signature 9 Grain bread. Or for lunch grab a delicious soup and sandwich combo, a Turkey Santa Fe sandwich or the incredible Miss Mary’s Chicken Salad. Open at 6 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends*, stop by on your way out for a day of fun, or set up shop for a few hours and take advantage of the relaxing atmosphere and free WiFi. O’Henry’s is more than just a coffee shop. They’ve been an active part of the community for more than 20 years. They buy and roast their own beans from their sister company, O’Henry’s Coffee Roasted Company. Their freshly roasted beans, friendly baristas, and tasty food make this one of our top café choices in town. Who is Going to Love It Kids may not be seen often at O’Henry’s, but that doesn’t mean families aren’t welcome. It’s a great place for a light breakfast or lunch, or even midday snack with menu items that will please both adults and kids alike. The atmosphere, however, feels as if you are in your own private corner. O’Henry’s is not a loud, overly-energetic place that will distract you from your personal work, but at the same time is the perfect place for a group to meet. Mom groups, writer’s groups, book clubs and more will find that O’Henry’s not only has plenty of room to accommodate groups and a variety of drinks that will please each attendee. Directions, Parking and Fees *Hours vary based on location, it’s best to check the website for the details, but generally speaking most are open 6-10 weekdays and 7-10 on the weekends.
