A stone’s throw from the bouldering problems and hiking trails at Moss Rock Preserve, this family-friendly bistro is one of the few spots in town where you can find a great burger and a delicious entrée salad (not insipid iceberg flakes that masquerade as leafy greens at many Southern restaurants). At the end of a long day in the woods, you’ll find lots of menu items that will satisfy a ravenous post-workout appetite. The Boot is a unique dining experience that is named for an English pub mentioned in Charles Dickens’ Barnaby Rudge. “This Boot was a lone house of public entertainment … several people drinking there, and great merriment going on.” What Makes it Great The Boot serves fresh, organic foods such as chicken and beef that have no steroids, and organic vegetables to give you the best, healthiest meal experience possible. They are also a proponent of community, serving draft beers from Alabama and Southwest breweries, including Birmingham’s own Good People Brewing Company, Back Forty Beer Company, and Avondale Brewing Company. The feel of the place is friendly, warm and welcoming. This is the kind of place that you can bring the whole family crew or go with a friend to grab a drink and enjoy conversation. The menu choices are amazing. We’re fond of the Garden Veggie dinner salad, topped with peas, carrots, red beets and granola. We can’t forget to mention the cheeseburger with smoky pimento. You’ll also find tacos (brisket, fish, chicken, shrimp) and sandwiches (don’t miss the fried catfish Po’Boy). About the fanciest thing on the menu is the BBQ NOLA, a mountain of cheese grits smothered with shrimp and Andouille sausage. With tongue-in-cheek menu options such as the Chuck Norris Burger or The Coach MT – BLT, you’ll no doubt have a little fun on the side of your meal. The small bar serves a variety of beer and cocktails, and some nights the Boot has live music. It’s located in a New Urbanist community called The Preserve, so expect lots of kids. Who is Going to Love It The Boot is geared toward the people that are looking for a classier experience but without the prices of a fancier restaurant. The atmosphere is casual with clean lines and modern décor. Prepared fresh every day, and with organic ingredients, these meals will definitely satisfy the health-conscious but will also please the palates of someone with high expectations concerning portions and quality. This is the perfect place to bring families with kids. The tables are large and there’s plenty of seating. There are high chairs galore to be sure that there are no kiddos that get left out. To be sure that children enjoy their experience as well, The Boot has included sides such as Mac & Cheese. Directions, Parking and Fees From I-459 S, take Exit 13 B for HWY 31 N.
