This newly completed trail has lived in the imaginations and dreams of local trail builders, planners and mountain bike riders for years. Finally reaching completion in fall of 2014, the 6.8-mile Around the Mountain Trail includes a solid dose of elevation gain (and loss), 360o views, and connections to additional trails. Circumnavigating 7,582’ Shafer Butte, ride through wildflowers and beneath tall pine trees on sweet soft-packed single-track.
Accessing this trail requires a short 1-mile climb up Deer Point Trail from the parking lot. Connect with Around the Mountain and take in the views that reach across the Boise Ridge and out towards the Sawtooths, the Owyhee, and the valleys below. At the end of the Around the Mountain trail, connect with either Morningstar Trail or Brewer’s Byway to ride back to the original parking area.
When it’s hot in the valley, the air is thick from the inversion and foothills trails are dusty dry, head up the hill for a refreshingly cool, forested respite. The temps up around Shafer Butte, More’s Mountain and the Bogus Ski Area in the summer are often 10-20 degrees cooler and offer excellent mountain biking and hiking with superb panoramic views. Trails are typically much less crowded than the lower foothills, and its common to only run across other trail users in the parking area.
Extend your time in the coolness by bringing up a mini grill and cool drinks for a BBQ with friends at the end of your ride.
