When the spring sun melts the snow from the Rocky Mountains, the rivers run high and wild. Most of the whitewater terrain in the Boulder area isn't for newbies: the creeks are littered with rocks, trees, and whatever else ends up washed into the water, but for advanced paddlers, it's game-on! Boulder Creek has several excellent put ins that offer fun, fast runs. And for the less extreme, there is a fun whitewater course on the west edge of town that is great for beginners (though it tends to run low by late summer). Clear Creek Canyon in nearby Golden is similar to Boulder Canyon, but it is a little more accessible for paddlers of all levels (and is only about 35 minutes away from Boulder). While not one of Boulder's premier sports, whitewater paddlers can still get their fix on the creeks and rivers that flow through town.
