FS 1206 is a long stretch of fire road that is open to traffic. It is about 15 miles long and connects two different parts of Pisgah National Forest. Along the whole length of this gravel road are campsites, some with gravel tent spots and permanent fire rings. Most of them have permanent cast iron grills, and have ample parking for you to pull off the road.
From town, drive into the main entrance of Pisgah National Forest and head north through the forest. You will drive about fifteen minutes towards the Blue Ridge Parkway, staying straight past Looking Glass Falls on your right. You will come to the Pink Beds and the Cradle of Forestry on your right, both of these areas will be open in season seven days a week, and the Cradle of Forestry has a small but really good cafe. FS 1206, or Yellow Gap Rd, is on your right soon after the Pink Beds parking lot. Campsites dot the entire length of the road, and are open to the public.
