The West Ashley Bikeway is a flat, 2.5 mile long paved bikeway that is excellent for family cruising, and it’s located right across the Ashley River from downtown. The path is located on what was once an old railway that makes for a nice elevated ride, with plenty of places to stop and take a break or take in the sights. The City of Charleston has done an excellent job of reclaiming this area for public use. Riding along this bikeway gives you the feeling of cruising a shaded country road that winds through live oaks and marsh. Even though the path is only 2.5 miles round trip, you will want to make a day of the trip. I would recommend bringing along some lunch and having a family picnic overlooking the marsh. The West Ashley bikeway is never too crowded, and it is a great way to spend the day.
