The nearest mountain from Charleston is a good three and a half hours away, but that has not prevented Charleston’s cycling community from creating some of the best singletrack mountain biking trails in the area.
Thanks to the dedicated team at Lowcountry Fat Tire Freaks, our bike trails are well managed and used year round, helping to grow an already enthusiastic mountain biking community. The Wannamaker North Trail contains natural and man made structures, tight curves, and tough changes in elevation that will leave you feeling pretty beat after you've conquered the 8-mile loop. This is a dirt trail, although it is safe to say that 40 percent of it is covered in tree roots. There is also a small BMX-style playground where more experienced bikers can mess around. This is a challenging trail, but loads of fun.
Similarly, the Horry County Bike Run Trail may be the most notorious singletrack on coastal South Carolina, The Hulk never leaves riders disappointed. For being miles away from anything resembling a mountain, this trail will make you question whether you are still in the Lowcountry, or if you've been transplanted into the Rockies. These trails are examples of riders making the absolute best of a very flat situation.
