Mac's is the ultra-cool, moderatly tatooed, laid back guy of the Charlotte BBQ scene. Award winning pulled pork, fall of the bone ribs, and huge chicken wings are just the beginning. Great music and a beer list representing a long list of international styles is what makes Mac's one of the best casual restaurants in Charlotte.
What Makes It Great
Stating that you know where to find the “best place for BBQ” in a southern city will open the door to a slaw slinging argument about sauce type which will inevitably include the phrase “falls off the bone!” So we’ll stop short of saying that the pulled pork, brisket, and ribs (both Kansas City and St. Louis style) are the best in Charlotte. But it is a fact that any tour of BBQ in charlotte needs to include a stop at either Mac’s location.
Of course, the pork is fantastic and has brought the team at Mac’s a trophy case of awards over the years. The pulled pork is full of its own smoky flavor and the ribs do actually fall off the bone. But you can’t overlook the beer can chicken. An extremely tasty roasted chicken situation that will require lots of napkins and less good manners to tear into. And the wings, oh the wings. They are among the largest in Charlotte, smoked and grilled so the flavor isn’t lost in a vat of oil.
While the generous portion of BBQ will take on a mountain biker’s size hunger, the side dishes are too good to pass up. Of course there’s fries and big fat onion rings. And no self-respecting BBQ joint would be caught without baked beans and slaw. But it’s the gooey, rich and creamy mac ‘n cheese that deserves the first spot next to all that pulled pork goodness.
Pairing it all with a great beer is easy. The list include dozens of brews from all major styles and types. While the list is not heavy with local products, it does represent a wide range of craft and international options.
Who is Going to Love It
The odd thing about Mac’s is that it’s a cool mix of biker bar, sports hang out, and family restaurant. This is the place for big appetites. But showing up at the busiest weekend hours may require a wait, so get your run in early and hit Mac’s before the rush. The upbeat atmosphere isn't for those looking for a quiet place for an intimate chat. Expect some lively conversation.
Directions, Parking, & Regulations
The original Mac's is located on South Blvd, just down from Atherton Mill. Parking can be a bit tight once the main lot fills up. There always seems to be one more spot on the side road just behind the restaurant though.
