Prominently situation on Main Street, right across the road from Davidson University, sits a narrow two-story shop tucked in perfectly next to a small used book store. The wood floor of the hundred-year-old building offers a satisfying creak with each step. The substantial aroma of perfectly roasted coffee beans hangs on the walls like an unseen decoration.
What Makes It Great
Summit coffee has been operating out of this old shop since 1998; fueling the early mornings, and late nights, of both the college and town of Davidson.
Downstairs, the swoosh of machines making frothy hot coffee drinks and crunch of the grinder battle with the chatter coming from a half-dozen small tables. Sneak around the corner by the front door, and a flight of steps reveal a wide open seating arrangement of cozy couches and wood tables. The patio out back is the place for sunshine, fresh air, and live music several nights a week.
Enough ambience. We’re here for the brews. In the morning, Summit baristas create caffeine fueled masterworks. The beans, roasted at Summit’s own roastery just up the road, are from carefully chosen, fair trade crops. In the evening, the brews shift towards the alcoholic sort from several taps and a substantial craft beer bottle list. Through it all, Summit serves pastry creations from their own kitchen.
Summit Coffee is an easy stop before or after taking down the trails at Lake Norman State Park or Fisher Farm.
Who is Going to Love It
True coffee aficionados: “hhhmm…I’m getting dark chocolate notes with a hint of lemon grass” to those needing an early morning jolt: “hhhmmm…gimme the caffeine” will appreciate the full palate of beverage options. Kicking back patio style is great after any adventure. Students of Davidson College fill many seats any time of day.
Directions, Parking, & Regulations
There's a small amount of parking along the far side of the shop. More than likely, you'll be looking for street parking. Even if you have to park a block away, the stroll on Davidson's Main Street is so pleasant you won't mind. Watch for the stairs to the upstairs seating, just to the right of the front door.
