If you’re looking for a quick workout in the Huntersville area, check out North Meck Park. This 98-acre pocket of forest has a pump track and a short mountain bike trail.
The park houses softball and multi-use athletic fields as well as a playground and basketball courts. Winding around the southern and western sides of the facility is the 3.5 mile mountain bike trail. The trail is mostly fast and flowing with a few moderate features.
What Makes It Great
The well-maintained trail at North Meck is tight and quick with a few sharp turns. This adds to the fun for the rider and gives good reason to be observant for the runner. It’s typically best to run in the opposite direction as bike traffic here, stay alert, and leave the Beyonce-filled iPhone in the car for this run. That being said, this is a fantastic trail to hit a good pace with a few ups and downs to remind you that it's not greenway. And while the trail itself is true single-track, most areas have ample room to step out of the way when faced with an oncoming biker.
If you forget your helmet, no worries. There are lots of trees ready to break your fall. Just kidding; you should wear a helmet. Give way to faster movers and announce your approach to slower movers.
Who is Going to Love It
It’s not a greenway but is a good option for the beginner mountain biker to get their feet wet (literately if you take the one non-bridged water crossing wrong) but fast and fun enough for more experienced riders.
Directions, Parking, & Regulations
Traveling north on Old Statesville Road, it’s not hard to miss the entrance to North Mecklenburg Park. The sign on the left is not very big, mostly green, and near some trees. But once you get there, it’s worth the effort.
To find the trails turn into the first lot on the left once you’ve entered the park. The biking entrance is near the front of the lot and exit (or runners entrance if you’re going that way) is towards the back of the lot close to the baseball field. There’s a trail map at the biking entrance and the Park has bathrooms and water fountains near the playground.
