A well marked system of cross country trails that loop around the backside of the beautiful Davidson College Campus. Located right downtown Davidson, the trails are convenient to plenty of post run refreshment opportunities.
The packed dirt surface of the well-marked 8K and 5K loops have just enough give to ease the knees but are hard enough to stretch out your stride and go. There are a few small hills so you can get a taste of vertical running without the need for a Sherpa but most of the mileage is at a gentle grade.
What Makes It Great
The cross country trails at Davidson College blur the line between greenway and trail running and as such, provide a perfect “gateway” into more technical treks.
Most of the trail is wooded and well shaded, providing a great alternative in the hot summer months. The path is relatively smooth with only a few roots or exposed rocks to navigate and the twists and turns are just enough to keep things interesting but allow you to run flat out in most spots.
The small system is made up of one long loop and two smaller ones. They are marked for a 5K or 8K run.
Access the trail near the soccer field on Ridge Road. It may take a little looking around, but your search will be worth it once you’re logging miles on the smooth, fast, peaceful trail. This path is excellent for walking as well and you'll see plenty of others taking advantage.
Who is Going to Love It
The forgiving dirt surface is a welcome option for die-hard road runners to get some miles that are off the road without really being “off-road”. For the experienced trail runner, the Davidson College X-country trails are super-fast and non-technical. The wide paths also bring families with bikes and the occasional stroller.
