From a climber's point of view, one would be hard pressed to find another US city with such an abundance of rock in such close proximity. The small cliff line of Leda may provide the easiest and quickest pump in metro Chattanooga. Situated just above Montlake Road on Mowbray Mountain, Leda serves up a nice collection of sport routes in a variety of grades. Routes have been bolted since the 1990's here and today boasts more than 70 lines, including beginner routes starting at 5.6 and going all the way up to 5.13a for the more experienced climber.
What Makes It Great
The proximity to town surely makes it convenient for a short day, and the shorter and low-grade routes of Upper Leda also makes this crag perfect for the beginner lead-climber.
From the designated parking, the approach is about 15 to 20 minutes. Leda is divided up into four areas, Upper, Lower, Leda Left and Leda Right. Upper Leda is where the majority of the routes are and this is the busiest area without a doubt. Lower Leda has 17 routes and is usually less crowded but just as high in quality. Leda left is located to the left of Upper Leda and Leda Right can be accessed from the intersection with the University Route at Upper Leda, keep hiking right to encounter the Leda Right routes.
Who is Going to Love It
The busy climber trying to get in a quick burn in the middle of the week will love it here, but also the weekend warrior that doesn't like to put a lot of mileage on the car.
