One of my favorite places in the Chattanooga area to use my flat water kayak is the sheltered bay at Chester Frost County Park in Hixson, Tennessee.
What Makes It Great
Chester Frost is a very family friendly area ideal for lily-dipping and noodling around, whether for a day or over a week of camping. Picnicking and grilling with friends and family, not to mention checking out the local culture, are popular activities. A powerboat launch, playground, bathhouse, sandy beach with swimming area, and a wealth of picnic tables and shelters make for a perfect lazy day on and around the water.
Boat traffic increases during the weekends and summer months, so if it gets crowded you may want to paddle along the abundant shorelines. That said, the sandy bottom of the swimming area make this a good place in which to introduce the sport to children and others new to paddling. It's also a great area to work on your own skills and techniques.
Who is Going to Love It
Paddlers of any ability can get on the water with confidence at Chester Frost.
Directions, Parking, & Regulations
The park is just 15 miles from downtown Chattanooga, but allow for 30-45 minutes travel time if there is traffic. Launch from the area adjacent to the beach, your campsite, or from any of dozens of waterside picnic spots.
Be aware that day use areas close at dusk, although 24 hour parking for late nights/overnights is available at the boat launch. Park day use hours are from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
