For a fairly new establishment, Hutton & Smith emulates a brewery that is already strongly supported by the local community. With Champy’s, Memo Grill, and the Bitter Alibi nearby, Hutton & Smith has settled right in to downtown Chattanooga’s local scene.
Joel and Melanie Krautstrunk moved to Chattanooga from Las Vegas after searching for a city that both supported local businesses and provided an abundance of outdoor opportunities. They decided on starting their brewery in Chattanooga after visiting only once. After countless hours of hard work and planning, Hutton & Smith opened its doors in June of 2015.
The historic brick building that houses the brewery brings a rustic style to the aesthetic of the place, which is complemented by the unique interior. Joel and Melanie did most of the renovation themselves, featuring stained glass bike tire lights and custom bar top.
What Makes It Great
Upon entering the small taproom, you have the option of sitting at a comfortable table or relaxing at the bar. The left side and the back of the brewery is filled with fermentation tanks and other brewery equipment, which gives a “behind-the-scenes” feel as you sit and enjoy your brew.
Hanging above the bar are bright teal beer steins marked with signatures and hand-drawn pictures which customers have purchased in order to enjoy 20 oz. of beer for the price of a pint. Also displayed behind the bar is a variety of merchandise for sale including t-shirts, pint glasses, and other items showcasing the Hutton & Smith logo.
The decision of which beer to enjoy is not an easy one, with around ten unique and delicious taps to choose from. Luckily, Hutton & Smith provides an irresistible solution to this dilemma with the option to purchase a flight. For only $5.50, your choice of four different brews are presented on a wooden paddle for you to sample. Whether you choose the Rope Gun Rye or maybe the Unconformity Ale, it’s hard to go wrong with these brews. Like what you taste and want to bring some Hutton & Smith home? You’ll want to purchase a 32 oz. crowler. Smaller than a growler and sealed in a can when you buy it, the crowler keeps Hutton & Smith’s beer just as fresh as when you tasted it from the tap. If you find yourself needing a snack, you might be happy to find that Goldfish are available for 50¢, as well as several other tasty options.
