The Cravens House is the gateway to some of Lookout Mountain's greatest trails. Conveniently located only halfway up the mountain on the Tennessee side, just past Ruby Falls, this old Civil War house is a great place to begin a run or hike. Not only does it boast a pretty amazing view of downtown Chattanooga, but it also has a lot of fascinating history, and even more possibility in terms of trail options. Here are just a few:
The Big Daddy Loop on the Bluff Trail -- a great 10-mile single track loop.
The Guild Hardy Trail -- a 5-mile trail leading up an old railroad bed.
Point Park Loop -- a 4.5-mile trail that takes you to arguably the best overlook of beautiful Chattanooga.
All of these trails are moderately technical and moderately difficult. If you're running, it's obviously going to be a bit harder (especially if you take the Bluff Trail all the way to Sunset Rock), but whatever activity or trail you choose will definitely yield positive results. Panoramic vistas of rolling ridges and valleys await behind most every bend, and especially during the winter, you're almost always accompanied by amazing views peaking through the leafless trees.
Take one of the three trails listed above or just go there and explore for yourself. There are lots of little connector trails and spurs, and there's a detailed and easy to use map located at the trailhead. Enjoy the history, scenery, and possibility of Cravens House and Lookout Mountain!
