The Chicago Athletic Club in Lakeview offers one of the most attractive indoor climbing walls in the city—you can see the massive, glass-enclosed wall and bouldering cave from the street. The club also offers all the other amenities you’d expect at a high-end health club, including cardio and strength equipment, personal training, group exercise classes and two pools. Walls are open to both members and nonmembers of the club.

What Makes It Great

The gym is one of three climbing facilities with six walls operated by the Chicago Athletic Clubs (the other two are in Evanston and Lincoln Park). The Lakeview location offers a 50-foot wall that’s hand-sculpted to resemble actual rocks. The facility offers crack climbing, roofs, dihedrals, slab and endurance routes. Classes are offered for beginning climbers every week, plus there’s instruction in sport climbing as well as private instruction. There’s an extensive kids' climbing program, including several climbing teams.

Who is Going to Love It
