There’s a great feeling that comes with completing a long run or ride in the morning with the whole day still ahead of you. And then there’s the even better feeling of following that up with a big stack of pancakes. Or an omelet. Or a cherry kijafa crepe.
That’s what makes the Walker Brothers Pancake House such a popular meeting place for post-race indulgences for running clubs all over the North Shore.
The original restaurant in Wilmette is now more than 50 years old, and is known far and wide for its apple pancakes, thick-sliced bacon and fresh-squeezed orange juice. There are five additional locations—Arlington Heights, Glenview, Highland Park, Lake Zurich and Lincolnshire—with pretty much the same menu.
Of course, you can find the same breakfast staples as at any breakfast spot here. Walker Brothers offers some excellent oven-baked omelets, including the excellent Sante Fe, with jalapenos and a spicy Habanero cheese for those who like to turn up the heat. Waffles, French toast and crepes are all on the menu, including that cherry kijafa, which is a Danish specialty that’s delicious. But it also offers some Walker Brothers originals, including its gigantic apple cinnamon pancake and crispy crunchy French toast, which is dipped in corn flakes, grilled and topped with bananas, whipped cream and powdered sugar.
OK, you’ll certainly get your fill of carbs here, but that’s why you woke up so early to get that run in, isn’t it?
For those who aren’t interested in breakfast for some inexplicable reason, you can also choose from several good salads and sandwiches. The BLT with smoked turkey is very good, as is the fresh strawberry pecan salad with bleu cheese.
You may want to up the distance of that morning run or ride.
