Intro

Lookout Mountain is the proving ground for all local cyclists along the Front Range. It is a challenge route for many riders either choosing to try and go faster every time they climb up or for those trying to get up Lookout a certain number of times a year.

What Makes It Great

The roadie-approved version of this ride is known as “pillar to post,” for timing purposes, referencing the stone pillars at the bottom of the climb, up to the sign post for Buffalo Bill’s Grave at the top. Then of course you’ve got the thrilling descent, that only counts for pure fun.

Begin this ride either from Denver (if you have someone to show you the way) or from the town of Golden or even from Boulder, for that matter. Finding your way won't be too difficult on the weekends because you can easily follow all the other cyclists heading up the hill.

Click your stopwatch at the pillars and begin the climb. Varying grades and switchbacks will test your mettle for the ensuing 7.4 km climb (according to Strava) reaching gradients of 5 percent (average) around awesome switchbacks, which provide breathtaking views of North and South Table Mountain and downtown Golden.

Directions, Parking, & Regulations

A lot of people park on the street in Golden around Washington St. Some folks like to meet at the Starbucks or a bike shop in downtown Golden, and there’s a parking lot and a porta-potty at Beverly Height’s Park, right at the base of the climb.

Bring your helmet, water bottles, fuel and sunscreen. And, of course, your motivation.
