Cherry Creek Reservoir

This is not only one of the greatest open spaces in the Denver area, but the reservoir itself is home to boaters of all types. It’s even the training ground for many triathletes and competitions throughout the year.

What Makes It Great

It’s a pretty easy drive from downtown Denver, maybe 40 minutes or less depending on traffic, and you have to pay a small day fee to park in the State Park. You’ll find everything from a shooting range to camping, nature trails and a marina.

Human-powered paddlers do have a place here. It’s a great spot to tour the shores in a sea kayak or test your mettle in an open canoe. The marina has boats for rent, or if you travel with your craft, just check with park rangers regarding any special restrictions or regulations during your visit.

There’s also an off-leash dog area, picnic areas, and this is a great place for a run or bike ride. Heck, you can even do your own triathlon if you want. It’s a one-stop shop for Colorado fun.

Who is Going to Love It

Flatwater paddlers will enjoy the chance to get out on some open, fairly protected public water and stretch out the shoulders.
