Ahh, Washington Park- where jogging was born in Denver back in the 1970s and where lots of people still frequent to this day. It’s one of the nicest parks I’ve ever experienced in my life, and probably the best park in Denver.
What Makes It Great
Easy to find and with plenty of parking, you’ve got options of paved sidewalks and/or dirt footpaths winding through the park, with plenty of lovely grass to stretch out on when needed at any point. There's also some great exercise equipment to bang out some pull ups, etc., and a flowing creek with two ponds for added scenery.
Goose poop is literally your only possible concern at this suburban Nirvana. There are lots of cute puppies and friendly people, families, and fitness groups. There are also soccer and volleyball leagues, and pretty much any type of person here is happy to chat with you, give restaurant advice, talk running shoes, or stay completely out of your way if that’s what you prefer.
The park is open from sun-up to sun-down and dogs must be on leashes. Other than that, it’s all yours to be explored and enjoyed. Bring a blanket or towel and lay out after your run, or head over to nearby coffee shops and restaurants near Downing and Alameda.
The external loop is approximately two-and-a-half miles so you can piece together as long a run as you like. Believe me, you won’t get bored!
Who is Going to Love It
It’s an excellent place to try minimalist or barefoot running as the paths are friendly and completely flat. Kids (and adults) can ride bikes around the interior roads; and it’s actually a great place for rollerbladers and roadies to stretch their legs as well.
