Intro
The Fort Morgan Bike Trail is a multifunction trail which is paved and level beginning at the Peninsula Community entrance. The trail is 11 miles in length and ends at the intersection of AL 59 S/Gulf Shores Parkway and AL 180 E/Fort Morgan Road Trail/Alabama Coastal Connection. At this intersection there are several shopping centers with more than adequate parking. The trail could actually begin near the center of town. Across the intersection, the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trails begin and the Fort Morgan Trail can easily connect with Coyote Crossing. By connecting these two trails, one could easily cycle 40 miles touring from one end of the island to another.
What Makes It Great
The Fort Morgan Trail winds through the more rural countryside of the Alabama Gulf Coast. Nearing the center of Gulf Shores, the trail does tend to intersect neighborhood entrances which can become busy. The trail passes several RV Campgrounds as well as public boat launches. It is wide and newly paved. Along the trail several swings and benches provided shade to sit and rest. Recycling and trash stations are also strategically placed. Beginning in either the Walmart or Rouse's Grocery shopping center, there are several options for restrooms and refreshment. This path does include a few dips and inclines but for the most part is a nice level easy trail for all ages and those that may need special needs. It can get a little buggy in some of the more densely wooded areas so wear bug spray. The Fort Morgan Road can become very busy during the mornings and afternoons. But for those daring enough, there is a single bike path that runs along the Fort Morgan Road until it ends.
Who is Going to Love It
This path is great for those who enjoy the leisurely ride with their families or those who don't want to compete with the traffic on the Fort Morgan Road bike path. Although it does not run the entire length of Fort Morgan as of now, it does provide a nice workout with ever changing scenery.
