The Cross Island Boat Landing is located underneath the Cross Island Bridge and provides access to Broad Creek near its mouth into Calibogue Sound. It is primarily geared toward launching motorized watercraft but has a small floating dock that can be used for launching kayaks. There is a lot of boat traffic immediately surrounding the landing but once you’ve gotten some distance you have all of Broad Creek to explore unhindered.
What Makes it GreatThe only other public access to Broad Creek is Marshland Road Boat Landing, which is located near the terminus of the creek. As big as Broad Creek is where you put your kayak in largely determines the area you’ll be able to explore. Cross Island Boat Landing provides public access to the parts of Broad Creek that are out of reach when you launch from Marshland Road. If you head directly across Broad Creek when you launch and stay left of the bridge there is an extensive network of creeks that run along the Spanish Wells community. This is a great spot if you want to see some of Hilton Head's most beautiful homes while also experiencing its natural beauty. If you head to the left past Palmetto Bay Marina you can either follow Broad Creek until it spills into Calibogue Sound or veer into one of the creeks for some exploration. For an endurance paddle, follow the coastline down to Lawton Creek, a favorite for guided kayak tours leaving from Sea Pines. A paddle to the right, under the bridge will take you deeper into the creek. It is very wide and there is a lot of boat traffic so it is best to stay to the side. Once you get past Wexford Plantation there is yet another arm of Broad Creek hosting an extensive series of waterways. If you launch in the morning you will avoid a good bit of midday boat traffic and the wind tends to be calmer in the morning.
Who is Going to Love ItFor those who have seen what Broad Creek has to offer from the Marshland Boat Landing this will provide some unexplored territory in a bit more fast paced environment. This launch site is best for those who are comfortable in maneuvering their kayak and navigating other marine traffic. Experienced paddlers looking for longer more challenging paddles will find the Cross Island Boat Landing a satisfying launch site.
