Jarvis Creek Park is 53 acre expanse of land with one main loop at approximately 1.1 miles long. This is the perfect spot to head out on your lunch break if you want to get a workout in. You could just as easily spend all day here with friends or family. The 1.1 mile loop is a paved trail that leads you through open fields, shady live oaks, and over boardwalks through the marsh. It’s actually pretty impressive how many different landscapes you experience on such a short trail. After running the main trail, or in between laps, there is exercise equipment available to stretch on, or continue your workout outdoors. Other amenities in this park include a fishing pond stocked with bass and bluegill (which may come as a nice change of pace for those of you who haven’t fished freshwater in a while) playgrounds for the kids, restroom facilities, water fountains, and pavilions to sit under in case of rain.
What Makes It Great
Jarvis Creek Park is where you want to take the family for a day outside. If you come here looking for a challenging trail run, you’re going to be disappointed by all of the happy children running around you and the perfectly manicured paved trail system. If you come here knowing that this is a place to have a picnic in one of the fields throughout the park, and that it looks like a modern day Mayberry, you’re going to have a much better time. This is also a great place to hang out on the boardwalk or dock to catch a lot of different wildlife in action. Absolutely bring your fishing pole -- if you can’t catch anything out of this fully stocked pond, then you’re probably fishing without a hook.
Who is Going to Love It
The best way to use this trail is for training. Between the exercise equipment and wide open spaces, this is the best spot on the island to workout short of an actual gym. Do yourself a favor and use this space and trail system to your advantage. You can drop your kids off at the playground while you work out, just make sure someone is watching them, since there are alligators in the lake… but you probably already figured that out if you know anything about Hilton Head (there are more alligators than squirrels).
Directions, Parking, & Regulations
The park is located just off William Hilton Parkway, across the parkway from Hilton Head Island Elementary School. Parking is available near the entrance of the park, and it’s easy to get a lay of the land just by stepping on the property and looking out over the acreage. Hours are from sun up to sun down and admission is free.
