Intro

Whether you’re looking to get outside for a bit or are looking for a creative way to explore a less-traveled section of the state, cycling from Hurricane Mills to Loretta Lynn’s Ranch is a fun and easy way to incorporate a bike ride, a little history, and some pop culture into a single afternoon.

What Makes It Great

This route is more fun than challenging because it has a perfect pit stop built in: Loretta Lynn’s Ranch and Campground, just outside of Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Take off from Hurricane Mills and make your way along 1.6 miles of the well-maintained Hurricane Mills Road. For part of the ride, you’ll follow along Hurricane Creek, and then the road cuts through the forest and past farmland. Eventually, you’ll end up at the country music singer and songwriter’s ranch (it will be on the left).

There are tours, both led and self-guided, and shows to catch—a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Tennessee. The ranch also has several museums 0n-site, including the Grist Mill Museum, Native American Artifact Museum, and Loretta’s Fan and Doll Museum. You can also rent a canoe to paddle on Hurricane Creek before heading back to town.

If you’re really excited about the ranch, make a reservation and spend a couple nights at one of the cozy cabins or bring a tent and set up at the campground.

You could also continue past the ranch and ride on TN-13 if you wanted to add more miles. The road has a decent-sized shoulder. A good point in the north is the town of Waverly (about eight miles) or south to the intersection of TN-13 and I-40 (just less than eight miles).

Who is Going to Love It

Cyclists who are up for anything or beginners who are looking for an easy route to get their feet (or wheels, in this case) under them will delight in this easy and interesting three-mile round-trip route through a lesser-traveled section of Tennessee. More serious cyclists will like the option to get in a longer ride on a country road with a wide shoulder.

The ride is a great way to get some fresh air, especially for country music lovers that are interested in learning more about Loretta Lynn’s life.
