Just a few miles north of town, Blacktail Butte offers some of the best sport crag climbing in the region. The lower Blacktail area features 15 bolted climbs and the upper area has 23. You can find a few 5.10 “warm up” routes, but expect 5.11 to 5.13 climbs on most routes. During the summer, mornings offer a shady respite from the sun, and early evening is also a popular time for climbing for the stunning sunset views. For those seeking a different type of climbing, head on up the iconic Grand Teton, a route that’s usually completed in two days by guided groups, though experienced private parties can complete it in one very long day (beginning well before sunrise). If you spend two days, be sure to get a backcountry camping permit. Whatever you choose to do up on the mountain, be sure to be down at least to the Lower Saddle by 2 pm, as thunderstorms commonly sweep in on summer afternoons, and they can be deadly.
