PistonBully groomed by Teton Valley Trails and Pathways, Teton Canyon is “the Cache Creek of Teton Valley,” says Scott Fitzgerald, owner of Victor-based Fitzgerald’s Bicycles, a business that has been instrumental in helping make Teton Valley a Mecca for fat biking. (Cache Creek is the most popular day use area with walkers, bikers, runners, and cross country skiers in Jackson Hole.) Except Teton Canyon is a little better than Cache Creek. “It’s totally flat and has big views of the Tetons,” Fitzy says. Cache Creek does not have Teton views and neither is it flat. (Cache Creek slowly, but steadily, gains 1,200 feet over the six miles before it hits the wilderness boundary.)
What Makes It Great
In Teton Canyon, snowmobiles are allowed, “but the trail gets very little snowmobile use,” Fitzy promises. “It’s mostly backcountry skiers using machines to access terrain at the back of the canyon.” Closer to the parking lot, near the base of Ski Hill Road, Teton Canyon traffic is mostly cross-country and Nordic skiers and fat bikers. In addition to grooming a wide skate skiing track, TVTAP also sets a classic track. “Expect to see lots of dog walkers too,” Fitzy says. This trail is six miles out-and-back. For the TVTAP grooming schedule, go to tvtap.org/nordic-grooming.
The dog walkers often don’t make it past the first two miles. Classic and Nordic skiers and fat bikers will have this track mostly to themselves after that.
At the mouth of the canyon, expect open agricultural fields. Further back in the canyon, you’re into pine forest.
Who is Going to Love It
