Intro

Nestled in the Cherokee National Forest, just minutes from Tellico Plains, Tennessee, is the Indian Boundary Recreation Area and Campground. With 96 acres of swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, and camping, the campground offers 85 sites with plenty of clean bathhouses scattered about the property. Far from city lights, Indian Boundary Campground is the ideal place to unplug. There is no cell service or WiFi, but the campground store has a phone if calls are necessary.

What Makes It Great

Quiet and safe, the campground is mostly canopied by large, looming mature trees, which provide plenty of shade on hot summer days and bursts of color in the peak of autumn. Though the campsites are graveled, the main roads are wide and paved with plenty of room for kids to play and bike. The spacious campsites are limited to five people and two vehicles, with a dump station on the property. While walk-ups are welcome, reservations are suggested to ensure you get a space.

The nearby recreational area offers a mostly flat 3.6-mile hiking/biking trail around the lake, along with a small beach and several put-ins for small boats, canoes, and kayaks. The Indian Boundary Outpost (i.e., campground store) has everything from basic necessities like food stuffs and firewood to souvenirs and local maps for the novice to experienced outdoorsman.

The area is particularly enjoyable for motorcyclists on account of its scenic roads, such as the Cherohala Skyway, and proximity to the Tail of the Dragon. A quick drive to the nearby Bald River Falls is a must.

Who is Going to Love It

Families will find that Indian Boundary Recreation Area and Campground meets all the requirements for a delightful, outdoorsy weekend, or weeklong vacation away from the hustle of work and school. Motorcyclists in particular will enjoy the winding roads scattered throughout the area, which is fun for afternoon rides.

Directions, Parking, & Regulations

Take exit 60 off I-75, then go south on Hwy 68 for approximately 30 miles. Turn left on Hwy 165, which is Cherohala Skyway, for 16 miles. Take a left on Indian Boundary Road, then a right onto Forest Srv Road, which leads to the campground entrance.

All four loops (A, B, C, and D) offer RV and tent sites with picnic tables, fire pits, grills, and lantern posts. Alcohol and firearms are prohibited. Overflow parking is available for a small fee. Reservations can be made at (877) 444-6777 or at www.recreation.gov.
