Many young and devoted climbers cringe at the thought of shipping off to college and leaving their home gym behind. A comfortable place to work out and build connections within the local climbing community is hard to find, especially when so much of your free time is spent dreaming about your next send or where you will get outside that weekend. At UT, this problem is irrelevant. With a gym equally perfect for that needed midweek climbing fix or for the first time send, the Vol Wall lets students and faculty crank hard every weekday after long hours in the classroom.
What Makes It Great
For students living on campus, the Vol Wall is only a short walk away. This convenience combined with a knowledgable and friendly staff of students makes this wall a joy to visit every time. It may even become your second home.
Located in the HPER Building (on Andy Holt Ave) within UT Knoxville's campus, the Vol Wall is easily the largest climbing gym in the Knoxville area. This sophisticated gym does an excellent job of creating routes and problems that mimic the types of climbs you'd actually find on real rock. The various overhangs, vertical routes, and cracks create an environment that is suitable for climbers of all skill levels.
Twice a year the Vol Wall hosts climbing competitions, so if you are looking to test yourself against the region's best check out the details at the front desk. Usually the fall competition is smaller, with the spring one bringing in dozens of climbers competing for actual collegiate ranking.
Who is Going to Love It
Anyone! Whether you are a lifelong rock monkey or a first time climber, this wall has something for you. The best part is that it is FREE to students. UT's Outdoor Program makes sure that everyone who visits this wall will have everything they need: from climbing shoes to harnesses to chalk. Just show your student ID, and you're good to go. Climbing at the Vol Wall is a great way to get out and meet new people while simultaneously enjoying a solid workout.
