Piney Falls Info

Piney Falls State Natural Area near Grandview, Tennessee features two waterfalls and stunning views of the Cumberland Plateau as you venture along the gorge. The waterfalls are fairly close together, and you’ll find wildflowers lining the trails in the spring. The lush forest makes for an enjoyable walk, and the waterfalls are best when there’s been a recent rain.

What Makes It Great

Once you get going on this trail, you’ll have three options: Head for Upper Piney Falls, Lower Piney Falls, or walk along the rim of the gorge. The split is around the halfway point, and there is a sign that indicates that the 80-foot Upper Piney Falls is to the right and the Lower Piney Falls is to the left.

You can do both in a day, but the easier trail is to Upper Piney Falls. The terrain on this section of the trail is pretty easy. When you approach the waterfall, you’ll notice that you can actually follow a small path that leads you back behind the waterfall. Be careful though, this route can be steep and hazardous. Use common sense and turn around if you feel unsafe.

The path to the left is unmarked and can be pretty rough if you’re a beginner. This trail takes you to the top of Lower Piney Falls before it spills over into the pool 40 feet below. Although you can’t access the bottom of this waterfall by trail, the view from the top is incredible, especially the beautiful cascades just before the falls.

When you head back up towards the trailhead, you’ll come across yet another path to the right that will take you on a different adventure. Follow this trail along the upper rim of the gorge above the creek. Walking among the natural shelf-like structure of the gorge wall is a unique experience, but proceed with caution in the winter as you may find yourself dodging icicles.

Who is Going to Love It

Piney Falls is a great adventure for the whole family. It’s open year round and offers a combination of hiking options. Though portions of the trail can be fairly steep, there are easier sections that will fit your needs.

Directions, Parking, & Regulations

Piney Falls is accessible from State Route 68. Once you get into the town of Grandview, look for a sign for Piney Falls State Natural Area, and turn onto Fire Tower Road. The trailhead will be on the right with a small parking lot. The gravel road is very rough past the parking lot.
