Looking for a mellow day hike? Or maybe a mid week over-nighter? Then Christina Lake should be on the list of considerations.
Christina Lake is tucked up in the Wind River mountains at approx. 10000 feet.
Getting to the trail head via Lander is a simple matter of driving up the (paved) switch backs past Worthen Reservoir to a well marked parking lot/trailhead just past Fiddlers lake. Depending on your speed anticipate a half/full day to get there and back.
The trail itself winds its way up through the rocky forested terrain typical of the Wind River Mountains. Elevation gain is modest with most of it occurring at the beginning of the hike. There are a few very manageable stream crossings along the way that also provide timely pit stops for the dog. At mile 1.8 there is a well marked trail junction. The sign indicating the direction to Christina lake is clear as is the the well worn trail itself.
As you approach Christina lake you will intercept the Christina Lake 4WD road. Here the track is deeply worn with several braided tracks winding essentially in the same direction. On the weekend expect to encounter several 4WD and ATV enthusiasts. Hiking mid week may be preferred.
The lake is gorgeous and worth the effort. here there are several options to consider; drink in the views, do some fishing, picnic or if you are still up for more consider investigating the quiet alpine lakes of Atlantic Canyon (an additional 4-8 miles round trip).
