The mountains around Los Angeles can be intense. The San Gabriel Mountains are steep; they erode the most debris than any other mountain range in the world. If you are planning on exerting yourself in such rugged terrain, it is best to be prepared with food and water. Additionally, many people have grown to love coffee prior to exercise; a lot of exercise physiologists promote coffee as an effective way to improve endurance. If you are planning a ride or hike around the eastern San Gabriel’s, such as a spin up Glendora Mountain Road or a hike around Mount Baldy, stopping at Classic Coffee in old Glendora is advisable. Located on a quaint downtown street at the base of the foothill, Classic Coffee can be a good starting point for a handful of local bike rides. Additionally, it is conveniently on the way to a number of local trailheads.
What Makes it Great
Large chain stores and restaurants have seemingly taken over many markets, but they will never fully eradicate the small time coffee shop. Coffee is primarily an experience, while other spending is often standard goods or services. People go out and look for unique experiences that are less about saving two dimes on an espresso shot and more about the people and history. Classic Coffee is a quaint shop with small town vibes.
Their goal is to deliver quality products and service, while also improving the community. This is the exact approach that most coffee shops should take. Community encouragement is key! They recognize that it is the community that is buying their product and strive to reciprocate the gesture. On their web page there is currently a cheeky add asking High School seniors to send in their picture so they can get them a graduation gift. This is such a sweet gesture! The shop has been around for just over ten years and it is their ‘down home’ approach that is really what keeps people coming back.
Who’s Going to Love It
The shop is on quiet Glendora Avenue, which is the main stretch of the city’s small downtown area. The shop has outdoor seating and an indoor area with a variety of seating options. It’s a great spot to sit outside and have an espresso before riding or to sit and do some work for a while. There is a nice atrium that is filled with chairs and has study vibes written all over it. If you are an after exercise coffee kind of character then you can go here and potentially also load up on carbs at the Italian restaurant next door.
