Intro

Located just outside Montgomery on Catoma Creek (which feeds into the Alabama River) Gunter Hill Campground has something for everyone. With 142 camping sites, three playgrounds, and a multi-facility court, the campground is a draw for couples looking for a getaway or families in need of an affordable vacation. Opportunities for fishing and nearby hiking trails make it a veritable paradise for the outdoorsman, and its close proximity to Montgomery and Selma mark it as an ideal spot for those wanting to visit some of the nation’s most important historic places.

What Makes It Great

Gunter Hill is an exemplary campground for those who love the great outdoors. Spanish moss hangs from the trees throughout the park, and the peaceful nature of the place will be sure to delight those looking to be active as well as individuals who just want to sit back and listen to the sounds of wildlife.

The campground’s location on Catoma Creek creates many opportunities for fishing. The only boat ramp is located in the Antioch Loop, but within a few minutes of exiting the ramp, boaters can be cruising the waterways of the Alabama River in search of crappie, bass, and catfish.

The campground’s paved roads and concrete pads make the entire place easily accessible for larger motorhomes. Spots 32-35 on the Catoma Loop are back-in sites that are popular with many visitors because of their close proximity to the bathhouse and playground, plus these sites face the water.

The two loops within the park, Catoma Loop and Antioch Loop, will give bikers and walkers the chance to explore the area’s beautiful landscape.

The campground is animal friendly, but pets should be kept on a leash.

A group shelter is available in case of inclement weather.

Who is Going to Love It

Gunter Hill Campground is a great retreat for anyone desiring to get in touch with nature. Families with young children will enjoy the location’s three playgrounds. Fishermen and women will love the place because of its easy access to the Alabama River. Hunters may want to take advantage of time in the nearby Lowndes County Wildlife Management Area where deer, turkeys, and wild hogs are known to roam. History buffs will be delighted with the campground’s close proximity to both Montgomery and Selma. When arriving at Gunter Hill, campers will exit US Hwy 80, the route taken during the Selma to Montgomery March during the Civil Rights Movement. The Little White House of the Confederacy as well as Old Alabama Town are located in downtown Montgomery, which is a short drive away.
