Niantic Bay is a semi circular bay along the Connecticut coastline. The area is part of Long Island Sound. For the most part the bay is not very rough due to Long Island blocking major currents or large waves from coming in. On a windy day there will be some white caps and the sea can get rough if there is a big storm out in the Atlantic. The only public boat launch is in the Niantic River. If you are launching from here it is important to know the tides so that you can get under the railroad bridge. There are many private beaches along the bay that you may be able to get access to if you know someone that lives along the water or rent a house. Niantic Bay is suitable for paddle boards, sea kayaks, and recreational kayaks. It is recommend that if you use a recreational kayak to have one that is at least 12 feet to make tracking in the water easier. The closer you are to the railroad bridge the stronger the current will be so be careful.
