Destination Distance From Downtown

The Papermill Trail is one of multiple trails belonging to the Madison Land Conservation Trust. The trail walks past the ruins of an old paper mill that was built around 1865 along the Hammonasset River. There are above ground remains, deep pits, and part of an old dam that are all still visible. Continuing along the trail heads north along the scenic Hammonasset River and its associated flood plain. While there I did notice a gentleman fishing near the dam. The trail is relatively flat as it follows along the river. If you start at the small parking lot at trailhead 1 and head counterclockwise you are able to get around a 3 mile walk in. This is an out and back but there are some loops that can add variety to your walk.
