Review

Intro

Panama City Beach has definitely earned a reputation as a spring break destination for the heartiest of partiers, but it’s actually a rather tranquil place for the remainder of the year, making it a perfect spot for some light water sports like paddleboarding. For those who want to enjoy the area’s quieter, more natural side, Walkin’ on Water Paddleboards offers an array of fun experiences in the heart of the Florida Panhandle, from SUP lessons and guided tours to independent board rentals and even board-top yoga classes.

What Makes It Great

To truly enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area, take one of Walkin’ onWater’s three guided tours. The gulf/lake tour begins with a 30-minute skills lesson going over the basics of stand-up paddleboarding, followed by a 1.5-hour trip from Camp Helen State Park through the lake and into the gulf if conditions are safe, quietly observing marine life along the way and enjoying a break in the middle of the excursion. The sunset tour offers a SUP primer as well as a 1.5-hour glide the golden beauty of a Pandhandle sunset over the placid surface of Lake Powell and the emerald green waters of the gulf, while the Holmes Creek River Tour changes things up a bit, letting you spend a half-day exploring the wild beauty of the area’s natural springs via SUP and snorkeling. On all three tours, life jackets and wetsuits (if needed) are provided by the staff.

Individual, couple and group lessons are offered for beginners in need of some extra instruction, while experienced SUP enthusiasts who would rather explore on their own can individually rent boards rated for weights ranging from 50 to 300 pounds. For those comfortable with the form, SUP yoga classes are held from time to time as well; check the WOW website for exact days and times.

Who is Going to Love It

Anyone who’s ever wished they could walk on water now has their chance, thanks to the surge in SUP’s popularity around the world. And if you’re experienced in paddleboarding, the Holmes Creek River tour is a great blend of boarding and snorkeling, letting you get up close and personal with the marine life under the surface you’ve been gliding over. The quiet beauty of the region stands in stark contrast to the high-energy guests who visit in droves each spring break, and there’s no more tranquil way to enjoy it than on a paddleboard, moving at a leisurely pace.
