If you are interested in paddling the Wekiva River and you're trying to avoid the crowds of the Wekiwa Springs State Park, a great place to visit is Katie Landing in Lower Wekiva River Preserve. The Lower Wekiva River Preserve is located in Sanford, Florida adjacent to the Seminole State Forest, and though it's a little outside of downtown, it's well worth the extra drive.

What Makes It Great

The Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park is separated into two sections with two different entrances. Both of these entrances are intended for people hiking, biking or horseback riding. Katie Landing on the other hand is a small portion of the park located on the Wekiva River. From Katie Landing, you will be able to launch your own kayak, canoe or paddle board.

If you have tried to launch your boat from Wekiwa Springs State Park you know how busy that park can get. While Katie Landing can sometimes get busy too, it's usually much easier to launch your canoe or kayak from here. Just to be safe, try to arrive early in the morning to get there before it gets too late in the day. You will have more of the river to yourself, and if you are visiting during the summer, you will beat the heat.

In addition to the launch area, Katie Landing includes parking, restrooms, and picnicking areas. Katie Landing does not include rentals though, so make sure to bring your own equipment before arriving.

Before your trip, be sure to check the water levels of the Wekiva River. Depending on the recent rain totals, the water level of the river can rise dramatically.

Who is Going to Love It

Anyone who enjoys any sort of paddle sport will enjoy enjoy the Lower Wekiva River Preserve. While on the river you will be able to take a relaxing float through the preserve and check out the wildlife. Keep your eyes open for Florida black bear, river otter, American alligator, sandhill crane and indigo snake which are all common to the area.

Directions, Parking, & Regulations

In order to get to Katie Landing, head west on state road 46 from Sanford, Florida and turn right on Wekiva Park Drive. Continue driving for one mile and Katie Landing will be on your left.

Keep in mind that even though the trails in Lower Wekiva River Preserve do not require an entrance fee, Katie Landing does. Make sure you pay at the honor box on your way in.
