Philadelphia Rock Gym: Oaks is one of three PRG locations. Oaks is the original PRG location and it was built in 1994. It has over 7000 square feet of climbing walls and a pro shop. The staff at PRG is friendly and knowledgeable about gear, safety, and climbing techniques.
What Makes It Great
PRG Oaks is the best indoor climbing facility in the eastern suburbs of Philadelphia. The rope walls are 35 feet tall and have over 2000 square feet of lead climbable walls. Route Grades range from 5.0 to 5.13. PRG Oaks also has 1500 feet of bouldering walls. The bouldering walls are about 15 feet tall and have every angle from slab to severe overhang. Bouldering grades range from V0 to V10.
In addition to the climbing walls, PRG also offers many climbing lessons and guided trips. There is a 15 foot toprope wall at the back of the gym where people can learn how to belay or young children can climb for the first time. Also at the back of the gym, is a private room for birthday parties and other events. Youth climbing is also a big part of PRG. Kids who sign up, can get coaching, compete with Team PRG in national climbing competitions, and go on guided climbing trips around the country. Adults also have the opportunity to sign up for PRG’s guided trips and compete in competitions held throughout the year at all three PRG locations.
Who is Going to Love It
Anyone can have fun at PRG Oaks. It is a great place for first timers to learn how to climb and for advanced climbers to train after work. The staff at PRG can teach you climbing and safety techniques in the form of classes and private lessons. For the kids, there are birthday parties, summer camps, and youth climbing teams. For advanced climbers, there are boulder problems up to V10, routes up to 5.13, and a training area.
Directions, Parking, & Regulations
To get to PRG Oaks from Philadelphia, take I-76 West for about 16 miles and exit onto 422 West. follow 422 West for 5.3 miles and take the Oaks exit. From the exit, turn left onto Egypt Road and follow it for 0.3 miles. Next, take a left onto Mill Road and follow it for 0.5 miles. Turn right onto North Drive and go 0.2 miles. PRG Oaks will be at the end of a large parking lot on your left. When you get inside, walk past the rope climbing area and check in at the desk to pay for a day pass, membership, or any other climbing service.
Daypasses are currently $17.50 and memberships are $50.00. If you want to be a member at all three PRG locations (Oaks, Valley, and Coatesville), a multi-gym membership is $10 more.
