Intro

The Perkiomen Trail is a 19 mile section of trail that starts at the end of the Schuylkill River Trail near Valley Forge and ends in Green Lane Park. Riding along old railroad beds and traversing through several parks, the “Perk Trail” is one of the more scenic rail trails in the Philadelphia area. The trail consists of mostly crushed gravel with several paved sections throughout. The majority of the trail is very flat, with one noteworthy climb coming in near direction near Spring Mountain.

What Makes It Great

The Perkiomen Trail is the renaissance man of rail trails. There are so many ways to enjoy this trail, from a casual ride with the family, a fast paced workout, a highway for bike commuting, a single track connector for mountain biking, and so many other possibilities. The trail does cross over a few busy roads, but the popularity of the trail is largely due to being car free. The trail is heavily wooded throughout offering very good wind and sun protection during the different seasons, as well as offering very scenic views.

If you are a mountain biker the Perkiomen Trail can be a great way to add miles if you are exploring Green Lane or Launch Bike Park. If you are a road cyclist the Perkiomen Trail can be a great tool to help find those hidden back roads everyone loves. If you are a commuter this trail offers great access to many neighborhoods as well as countless businesses and restaurants. If you are a fair weather bike rider just looking to get out of the house the many parking lots are sure to make this a convenient trail.

Who is Going to Love It

All ages and skill levels will enjoy the Perk Trail. Avid cyclists all the way to people that just dusted off their childhood bikes can be found enjoying the trail. The trail is an extremely popular destination for all types of activities. If it’s a sunny Saturday in the summer keep in mind that it’s very likely to see many people out enjoying the trail. Don’t let it stop you but expect to pass people and be passed on those beautiful days. If you are looking for a longer ride, the Perkiomen Trail connects right into the Schuylkill River Trails which runs directly into Philadelphia.

Directions, Parking, & Regulations

The Perkiomen Trail runs from Valley Forge to Green Lane with many parking lots conveniently places along the trail. If starting at either end is not convenient for you one of the favorite mid-way parking lots is the Central Perkiomen Valley Park.

This Park is located on Plank Rd off of Route 29. This large parking lot is ideal with creek access, playground, picnic tables, hiking, and even indoor bathroom facilities. As you ride the trail you may even notice a parking lot that is more convenient for your needs.
