Falls Lake Trail runs along the south side of the lake, and is accessible from road or parking areas roughly every 3-4 miles. It is 25-30 min from the heart of Raleigh, and the trail is approximately 50 miles in length with many options for parking cars along the entire length. There is no elevation change, but the trail rolls as is typical of the Piedmont. The trails are shaded by pines and hardwoods with many views of the lake. West of Hickory Hill Boat Ramp is technical and hard to navigate due to NC Wildlife clear cutting for new power lines, but the East side of Hickory Hill to the dam is easy to navigate and a great place for hiking or trail running. Falls Lake is good for all ages and pets, and sunrise and sunset views of the lake are particularly beautiful. Be cautious of ticks and mosquitoes, and bring enough hydration. Even with canopy cover, it can get hot and humid during the day. The trail is blazed with the Mountains to Sea white dot. It is very well marked and easy to follow through the woods.
