This trail is easily completed within 30 minutes, but with the amazing 360-degree views and wildlife-viewing opportunities, this isn't a trail visitors will want to rush through.
  2. Featuring steep inclines, meandering creeks, lush greenery, and gushing cascades, the James K. Carr Trail is a 3.4-mile trail, in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, that shouldn't be missed.

    From Downtown

This trail can be completed in as little as two hours, but due to the steepness of the trail it's a good idea to give yourself time to take breaks as needed to enjoy the hike.
  3. Referred to as “the eighth wonder of the world" by President Theodore Roosevelt, Burney Falls features a 129-foot waterfall with easy access and no shortage of scenic splendor.

This is a short hike, but there is a lot to see along the way so an hour will give you plenty of time to take it all in.

    Difficulty
    3 of 5 diamonds
    From Downtown
    45.6 miles

Although the distance is short, the path requires more attention due to the unstable rocks, tree roots, and required scrambling. Also, the trail doesn't open until early summer so the weather can be in high 80s to mid 90s. Completion time includes plenty of water and photo breaks.
  5. Offering panoramic views of the majestic Mt. Shasta and a chance to delve into beginning rock climbing, the 5-mile Castle Dome hike at Castle Crags State Park is a must for adventure seekers.

As this is a steep trail with some light rock climbing, give yourself time to take breaks and to ensure your footing when climbing.

While this is a short hike, there's a lot to see with the Ney Springs ruins and the waterfalls. We also hiked just above the falls and explored the creek beds.

There are multiple access to this trail so hikers can choose to hike smaller sections at a time or do the entire loop. Please note that during the rainy season, the temporary wooden bridges providing easy access across the delta are not in place. These are usually up from May to June.

    From Downtown
    52.7 miles

If all you are doing is hiking and taking a few pictures here and there, two hours is plenty of time to complete the hike. However, if you want to get up close and personal with the water falls for better photos and maybe do a little swimming, you will want to allow yourself more time to get the full experience.
  12. Located in Oroville, California, Table Mountain offers over 17 waterfalls, several caves, and an Indian ghost town. As if all that isn't awesome enough, there are ancient lava fields and breathtaking views of the valley.

This hike is as long as you want it to be. The first waterfall is about a mile in, but there are several other falls on the mountain as far as 3 miles from the trailhead.
