Intro
Planet Granite is San Francisco’s premier climbing gym, with 25,000 square feet of climbing bliss located near the base of the Golden Gate Bridge at Crissy Field in the Presidio. The place isn't just about climbing, though - it has two yoga studios and weightlifting and cardio equipment, too. It’s a fitness oasis frothing with hip athletes and cool vibes. Especially after a long day at work, it’s a lively and friendly atmosphere, easy to make new friends and really the best place to be on any weeknight, if you’re a beginner or border-line pro.
What Makes It Great
Planet Granite has something for everyone, even if you don't climb. There are a variety of yoga classes taught by the Bay Area’s best instructors, with everything from mellow meditative yin classes to intense heated core power classes. Personal trainers are always available for private fitness sessions.
But the centerpiece is definitely the climbing. An amazing two-level bouldering area is unlike anything you’ve probably ever seen. A 120-foot traverse takes you from the first to second floor. Plus, VO-V13 original routes are crafted every two weeks, and you’re likely to run into the same familiar faces working on the same problems day in and out.
The top rope area is just as incredible—there are over 100 routes, reaching 45 feet tall. An epic overhang lead-only area is right in the center, and just watching climbers is jaw dropping and inspiring. While climbing, catch views of the Golden Gate, and sailboats out on the Bay. Parking is prevalent, the staff is friendly, and if you don't have a climbing buddy, you’ll have four new ones by the end of your first week. It’s a true gem for a gym and worth any trek in the city to get to it.
Who is Going to Love It
Climbers are going to fall on their knees for this place. Beginners are quickly going to fall head over heels. Yogis celebrate it. Kids go crazy for it. Planet Granite is one of those rare places in the city that attracts all sorts of people from young kids at climbing camp, to semi-pro climbers training for the next big bouldering comp.
PG hosts a semi-annual comp with open registration for everyone. It’s a unique, beautiful place that exemplifies the marvel of San Franciscans and the art of climbing.
Directions, Parking, & Regulations
Planet Granite has four locations—San Francisco, Sunnyvale, Belmont and Portland, OR. The SF location is in the Presidio’s Crissy Field area, right next to the water near the Golden Gate Bridge. Paid parking is prevalent during the day, but gets tricky after 7 pm when it’s free.
You can rent all the gear you need, but expect to pay $25 for a day pass or $70/month. Rules and regulations are strictly enforced inside the gym and no one goes anywhere until signing the accident and release of liability waiver. Bring a friend for free on first Fridays.
