Very popular and very easy, the Half Moon Bay Coast Side Trail is part of Half Moon Bay State Beach. (It's also known as Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail and is part of the California Coastal Trail for added confusion.) The state beach, itself, can be a great place to kayak or play.

What Makes It Great

Most riders start at the parking lot at Pillar Point Harbor, though you can also start at the state beach parking lot. The visitor center has maps if needed, but the route is pretty straight-forward. The trail runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean on a former Ocean Shore Railroad track. The five-mile ride passes beaches that are perfect spots for a picnic break. Keep an eye out for blue herons and red-tailed hawks. In the winter watch the surfers riding the ways at Pillar Point.

Who is Going to Love It

If the family wants to split up or plan a post paddle bike adventure the Coast Side Trail is well worth a visit. This is a casual, laid back route to ride and is geared towards those looking for a modest cycling day.
