Once in a blue moon (and no, not the weak and watery liquid that requires an orange to be palatable; rather the lunar anomaly that's colloquially used to describe rare events), a brewery comes along that completely revolutionizes the craft-beer playing field.
Lagunitas is one such brewery.
Founded in 1993 in Lagunitas, California, and moved a year later to the nearby town of Petaluma after the operation had some rapid early success, Lagunitas has most-assuredly and most-deservedly become a household name among beer-drinkers across the country over the last two decades.
Today, Lagunitas has two brewery locations: one in the original home of Petaluma (okay, not technically the original home, but close enough!) and one in Chicago, which started producing beer in 2014. Both of these locations have TapRooms, which offer daily beer tastings, exciting events, live music, and more.
This article describes the Petaluma location.
What Makes It Great
What isn't great about Lagunitas? Everything they do, they do right. From the branding to the bottling, the copywriting to the community-building, the distribution to the design—it's all on point. Not to mention, the "Petaluma TapRoom and Beer Sanctuary," as it's so aptly called, promotes daily music, raucous festivals and circuses, and of course, award-winning, bold-tasting, unconventional brews that are truly kick-ass.
Seriously, the only bad thing about this place is that the TapRoom isn't open everyday of the week.
With the exception of Mondays and Tuesdays, however, the good people at Lagunitas are happily waiting—waiting to show visitors what good beer and good times are made of.
It really doesn't get any better than heading to their sunny sanctuary in the late afternoon, snagging a few of their rarest brews, and listening to live music, which promptly starts at 4:20pm every weekday.
The atmosphere is always hip and happening, and there are even snacks and shareables that pair nicely with any of their brews.
Who is Going to Love It
Anyone who loves quality beer that doesn't necessarily conform to the traditional standards will love Lagunitas. Also, anyone who appreciates the finer details of what goes into a brewery operation will become quite giddy upon visiting. The Beer Sanctuary grounds are brimming with creative energy—plenty of renowned musicians have graced their stage in years past—and there's a ton of appealing advertising and branding that's evident around every turn.
Of course, any brewery could have a solid marketing team, yet still have a crummy product. Not the case with Lagunitas. When it boils down to it, the beer produced at Lagunitas is what the people come for. And it's what makes leaving such a difficult prospect. No matter what style of beer typically suits your fancy, Lagunitas will undoubtedly deliver a brew that exceeds all expectations.
