Located right in the heart of San Francisco, Mount Sutro is an open secret for locals. Since many of the trails on Mt. Sutro reopened in 2011 after being closed for 50 years, you can now ride one of the city's famous peaks.
What Makes It Great
Located near (and owned by) the University of California-San Francisco, a series of the well-marked mountain bike trails crisscross this 61-acre reserve. A canopy of 200-foot tall Eucalyptus trees shade the Historic, Fairy Gates, and Ridge trails and give you a sense of riding in a wilderness far removed from the urban downtown -- even though you never actually leave the city.
Who is Going to Love It
The trail system is only 2.5-miles long but the variety of terrain and technical sections will prepare novice and intermediate mountain bikers for more challenging rides. It is also possible to connect to nearby open spaces, Mount Davidson Park and Glen Canyon, for a full ride all inside city limits.
